I’ve been wanting to write about SyFy’s newest superpower show, Alphas, for a while now, pretty much since I watched the very first episode. I wasn’t exactly sure how I felt about the show until I saw this article over on Wired and, basically, disagreed with everything.

First off, if you don’t watch the show, you should probably know what it is about. Alphas is about a team of people with superpowers who fight superpowered crime and, less frequently, regular crime. Yep. The show is very regular, except for one part, which happens to be one of the best things happening on television right now.

I find it difficult to take anything seriously when the term “power” or “superpower” is used in a serious matter. A few shows in recent memory probably felt the same way — replacing “power” with “ability” or some other synonym — the most notable being The 4400 and Alphas. So, Alphas received an immediate point for not having grown adults running around town saying things like “Just use your powers!” or “Wait, let me charge up my powers!” I understand there isn’t really another term for “superpowers,” but the reason why I don’t quite jive with the term is because superpowers tend to fall into the trap of being too powerful and used for a variety of characters throughout superpowerdom, which tends to lead to stronger foes being necessary, which then leads to the superpowers being used in even stronger ways. It’s a never-ending cycle and leads to superpowers being so overpowered that the situations the heroes get into become increasingly ridiculous to compensate for their overwhelming power. When I saw that the heroes on Alphas had abilities, as the show calls them, that were very limited, it scored another point. After that, though, I found that the show only gets one another point. Not because it is bad, but because apart from the aforementioned limited abilities and one of the characters (who we’ll get to below), the show is astonishingly regular.

The show focuses on Dr. Rosen, played by the venerable David Strathairn, a psychiatrist who deals with alphas, the show’s titular term to describe people with special abilities. He put together a team of alphas to fight crime and villain alphas. Bill, an ex-FBI agent, can summon super strength, but only for a quick burst because it puts stress on his heart. Nina, your stylish rich girl stereotype, makes people do what she says for a few minutes, an action the show dubs as “pushing” people. Cameron has super accuracy, something that actually makes him quite good at parkour somehow, but he loses the accuracy in critical moments due to nerves; he’s basically Marvel’s Bullseye, but not a lunatic. Rachel has enhanced senses, to the point where she can detect throat cancer on someone’s breath, but can be overwhelmed by too much stimuli. Finally, we have Gary, a high-functioned autistic who can sense electromagnetic waves in such a way to where the show depicts it as him being able to see floating screens with information on them, even television shows, and can also hear all accompanying audio. Ryan Cartwright’s portrayal of Gary and the dialogue written for his character is where Alphas stops being so regular and provides some of the most entertaining scenes and pieces of dialogue currently on television.

So far during season one, most of the episodes feature a new rogue alpha that Rosen’s team must capture in some way, resulting in said rogue alpha being sent to some ominous government-run imprisonment camp for alphas. The show’s story seems to follow the general arc most similar shows follow: Have a standalone episode, but tie it all together, either by theme or by actual plot, in the last five minutes or so to build up the events that will probably culminate in the season finale. Many popular shows do this — Burn Notice, Eureka, even geekdom’s own Doctor Who — and for those that desire some sort of deeply-woven narrative, so far, Alphas won’t whet their appetites. Instead, Alphas seems more concerned with making sure people can jump right in — never a bad strategy, but one that — as fans of Burn Notice will surely groan — quickly becomes tiring.

Though the show hasn’t even finished its first season as of yet, it hasn’t done anything to make its audience worry about the characters. Sure, it’s possible the writers can throw us a curveball and suddenly kill off a character, but so far, the episodes haven’t done anything to show us we need to be worried about our heroes. They’ll just use teamwork and save the day, then laugh at the end of the episode when someone makes a joke, or maybe a character will stare out of a window, anxious of what the future might hold.

It seems like Alphas doesn’t know what it wants to be, so it tries a little of everything. We have our love story, we have our X-Men style debate of whether or not alphas are just human and should be treated as such, we have crime fighting, and we have Gary’s charming humor. Though any piece of entertainment media shouldn’t be focused solely on one theme, Alphas doesn’t really blend the themes together, as they seem separate of the rest of the show. Even the title sequence can’t seem to decide what the show is about, blasting a fun rock track while showing vastly contradictory imagery: Grainy footage of a human flying through the sky in front of some buildings, what is that thing, look at how mysterious and scary the show is, but wait, now there’s a guy breakdancing for no reason.

Oddly, the show seems to know exactly what to do with Gary. The other actors are fine and the writing isn’t bad — just regular — but the perfectly tailored dialogue for Gary compared to the otherwise completely regular dialogue for every other actor on the show and obvious plot points make me wonder why the quality surrounding everything Gary-related raises so significantly. It is instantly noticeable, and it feels like the show has some kind of brilliant gunslinger consultant that breezes into writing and filming sessions and only has say over any scene in which Gary makes an appearance.

I wouldn’t tell anyone to avoid Alphas, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone either. If anything, I’d say, “That show Alphas? Gary is pretty awesome, but he’s not in every scene.” So, how do I feel about that show Alphas? Gary is pretty awesome, but he’s not in every scene.

While his martial-arts skills have always ranked Jackie Chan among the greatest action stars of all time, the Chinese actor is also well known for choosing comedy over drama. Hell, even his more serious films have a sense of levity simply because you can’t help but smile and laugh as Chan pulls off death defying stunts and kicks serious ass. Watching the newest trailer for 1911, however, it would seem that this time around we won’t be laughing very much. Check out the preview below or in HD over on Apple.





In addition to starring, Jackie Chan also co-directed and produced this new film, which is the 100th of his career. Set in 1911 (duh), the movie is about the creation of the Republic of China, when Sun Yat-sen (Winston Chao) led the overthrow of the Qing dynasty. Chan plays Huang Xing, a man who would end up being the commander-in-chief of the army after the revolution and was one of the founders of the Kuomintang (the Chinese Nationalist Party). While the movie is set to be released this week in China, it will be released in North America on October 7th.

Craig Thompson’s new graphic novel Habibi is an enormous and genre-busting graphic novel that blends Islamic mysticism, slave/liberation narratives and post-apocalyptic science fiction, creating a story that is erotic, grotesque, and profoundly moving.

Habibi is set in an atemporal Middle Eastern country that seems at times to be caught in classical times, but whose landscape is dotted with derelict jeeps, poisoned water awash in rotting consumer goods and other elements from out of time. Dodola, a child bride, is captured by slavers who murder her older husband, a scribe who had reared her on the stories, sutras and legends he was paid to calligraph. On the run, she rescues a younger slave boy, Zam, and the two become refugees together. They find a new home in the desert, a strangely out of place wrecked ship amid the sands, which they make into a snug home. Dodola raises Zam as her son, and to feed them both, she must prostitute herself to the caravans that pass by their hiding place.

When violence comes again — when Dodala is enslaved to a capricious sultan’s harem — Zam is on his own, and is also soon in trouble. The story veers into Scheherazade territory as Dodola tries to charm the sultan into releasing her, but with the dark threat that usually lurks in the background in Scheherazade brought to the foreground. Zam is battered by life and circumstance, mutilated and enslaved, and still the two pine for each other.

Habibi is told in a dreamlike, non-linear, dense style, with asides for swirling Islamic legends, the theory and practice of magic squares, the hidden meanings in Arabic calligraphy, jumping from time to time and place to place, giving the book a deep, mythic resonance. The tale is epic and often horrific, but so well told that it grips you right through it’s 670-odd pages.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book quite like this, and I expect I’ll be thinking about it for a long, long time.

Much of this debate is focused on the idea that the number of species is determined by the productivity of the habitat.Shouldn’t a patch of prairie contain a different number of species than an arid steppe or an alpine tundra?

Maybe not, says an international team of scientists that pooled its resources to re-evaluate the relationship between species numbers and habitat productivity.

The innovative, standardized global sampling of 48 sites on five continents yielded an unprecedented data set.

“Our study shows no clear relationship between productivity and the number of plant species in small study plots,” says Utah State University plant ecologist Peter Adler.

Scientists say Adler’s and his colleagues’ findings represent a significant advance in ecological thought. The findings appear in this week’s issue of the journal Science.

“We challenged a prevailing model developed in the early 1970s by British ecologist J. Philip Grime,” says Adler, lead author of the paper. “He proposed that the number of species rises then declines with increasing productivity.”Though hotly debated, this “hump-shaped” model has remained a textbook standard for nearly four decades.

Drinking while pregnant can reduce future fertility in a male fetus

Doctors can vary a bit in the recommendations about drinking and pregnancy.

Some medical professionals say as much as a glass of wine daily is okay, while some believe there is no way to determine how much alcohol, if any, is safe to consume while pregnant. But a new study indicates that even moderate drinking during pregnancy can have lasting effects on a male fetus:

In a study of almost 350 young men, sperm levels were a third lower in those whose mothers had drunk more than four drinks a week during pregnancy compared with teetotallers.

The Danish researchers told a fertility conference these men may have a harder time getting their partner pregnant.

The study grouped participants one of four ways: women who abstained totally, those who consumed 1-2 units of alcohol per week, those who consumed 3-4 units of alcohol per week and those who drank more than 4 units a week. Men whose mothers belonged to the latter groups had a concentration of sperm 32% lower than men in the first group.

The BBC goes on to state that UK researchers believe drinking while pregnant may not so much cause the reduced fertility in affected males so much as indicate other markers leading to the findings. Dr. Alan Pacey of the University of Sheffield elaborated:

“It needs following up but it might help us understand factors which affect testicle development in the womb.”

As Twilight mania continues to take the world by storm, experts are cautioning parents about an alarming new trend amongst young fans — it seems teens are so anxious to emulate the Bella and Edward that they've taken to biting each other as a show of affection. In some cases, these bites draw blood.

ABC News ran a piece on the phenomenon recently, talking with Sexologist Logan Levkoff about what it means. She surmises, “Biting is sort of an extension of the hickey. It's that same thing about marking someone else and showing passion.” And while it doesn't seem a whole lot different than the “blood brother/sister” ritual kids have been partaking in for ages, there are some risks involved.

About 10 - 15% of human bites become infected, and biting can spread diseases like Hepatitis and HIV. While this may be the “new hickey”, it's one that comes with many more potential dangers.

Teens, including the sixteen year old interviewed in the piece, seem non-plussed about the health risks. The young male in the clip posits that it's simply a way of showing deeper affection to his girlfriend and states that it will never replace kissing. In the most hilarious moment, he compares biting to getting a cool case for your iPhone to make it look prettier. Ah kids, is there anything they can't tie back to the iPhone?

The segment — which you can see after the jump — does mention one more thing of concern to parents. Some of these young lovers are not only biting, but they're cutting as well, and that's one of the fastest growing self-abuse issues facing young adults today.

So, what's the bigger danger facing our youth today — Twilight biting or the rampant outbreak of teen werewolves?
